Most people with diabetes don’t realize the link between diabetes and oral health problems.
This information comes from a report in the British Dental Journal. The report was titled “Oral Health Awareness in Adult Patients: A Questionnaire Study.” The report explains the reasons why diabetic people have a higher risk of developing dental problems.
The researchers indicated that diabetes can enhance the progression of gum disease, leading to quicker tooth loss. Diabetes can also result in more inflammation of the gums when compared to nondiabetic people.
The study surveyed more than 200 adults and realized that many people with diabetes didn’t know there were increased dental risks. To be specific, 13 percent of the people knew that their swollen gums could be made worse by diabetes, compared to 12 percent that realized diabetes could produce a higher risk for tooth loss.
Diabetic people don’t realize the value of dental care when compared to other aspects of their health they must take care of. But the truth is that dental care is one of the most important aspects of their health.
It’s crucial that, as a whole, people with diabetes become more aware of these issues. Diabetic people need to be more educated about this problem, and that can start with their dentists. That way, a major health problem that could have easily been prevented will be stopped from happening completely.
