1. What are the fundamental rules in positioning the radiograph in mouth?
All the films have a small round impression in one corner on the back of the wrapper. The radiograph is positioned in such a way that the dot is always in the occlusal position. A small convexity facing the anterior part of the radiograph corresponds to the mark. The film holder is placed here while developing.
2. How is the radiograph oriented while reading?
In the radiograph, the teeth are oriented in the same way as in the patient’s mouth. While viewing, the radiograph is held with the convexity facing the viewer which will help in the interpretation by determining right or left.
3. What are the requisites of a pre operative radiograph?
The radiograph must include the entire area of interest. The apices the teeth must be entirely visible, must be atleast 3 mm away from the norder of the radiograph. If there is a lesion around the apices of the tooth, a radiograph with the entire lesion and some healthy surrounding bone must be obtained. Radiographs must have as little distorsion as possible. They have to be handled carefully without any stains, scratches and other artifacts.
4. What is the importance of the small convexity on the x ray film?
A small convexity present on the film guides the positioning of the film on the mouth. This dot is always positioned in the occlusal portion and the source of the x ray corresponds to this convexity. The film holder is placed here while developing and it can be easily felt in dark. After drying, the convexity helps for orientation of the film for reading, with the convexity facing the viewer. This is the only way to know the right and left sided tooth.
