They are the space maintainers that can be removed and reinserted into the oral cavity by the patient.
CONDITIONS WHERE THESE CAN BE USED
Bilateral loss of posterior teeth in the mandibular arch before eruption of tooth.Missing anterior teeth where it is made functional.
Cases where patient cooperation is not a major criteria.
When space maintainer is required for a short period of time.
CASES WHERE SUCH SPACERS CANNOT BE USEDUncooperative patients
Patients allergic to acrylic
Epileptic patients
FIXED SPACE MAINTAINERS
Are the space maintainers that are designed to be cemented on to the tooth and thus cannot be removed by the patient.
ADVANTAGES
Patient cooperation is not required
Jaw growth is not hampered
Succedaneous teeth are free to erupt, depending on the design.
Masticatory function is restored if pontics are placed
DISADVANTAGES
Elaborate instrumentation is required.
Increased risk of caries
Some designs interfere with eruption of successor, as with band and bar space maintainer.
TYPES OF SPACE MAINTAINERS
Band and loop space maintainerLingual arch space maintainer Distal shoe space maintainer
Dangerous space maintainers
They are removable unilateral space maintainers. we believe removable unilateral space maintainer should not be used. They are too small and present swallowing and choking danger for children.
REQUIREMENTS
Should maintain the desired dimensions of the space created by the loss of tooth.
Should not interfere with eruption of occluding teeth.
Should not interfere with eruption of the replacing permanent teeth.
Should not interfere with speech, mastication or functional movement of mandible
Should be simple and strong
Easily cleansable
Should not restrict normal growth and function.06/05/2012 at 2:52 pm #15449DrsumitraOfflineRegistered On: 06/10/2011Topics: 238Replies: 542Has thanked: 0 timesBeen thanked: 0 times06/05/2012 at 3:08 pm #15450drmithilaOfflineRegistered On: 14/05/2011Topics: 242Replies: 579Has thanked: 0 timesBeen thanked: 0 timesSpace maintainers are the devices used to maintain or regain the space following the loss of deciduous toothteeth.
When space maintainer is needed ?
When there is premature loss of the milk tooth e.g. the lower second molar which should ideally be lost at nine to ten years of age , but beause of decay the child loose it at the age of five years , then that child needs the space maintainer to maintain the space till the permanent tooth is ready to come in that space.
Premature loss of 2nd molar space maintainer is indicated
AFTER HOW MUCH TIME OF EXTRACTION SHOULD IT BE GIVEN ?
Maximum space closure occurs within the first 6 months after extraction. therefore it is best to insert an appliance as soon as possible after extractionWhen the space maintainers should not be given?
When there is no alveolar bone overlying the crown of erupting tooth and there is sufficient space for its eruption.
When space left is excess of the mesiodistal dimensions requiredfor the eruption. When permanent succeeding tooth is congenitally absent and space closure is desired. -
