When the little kids start walking or even earlier than that, ever now and then they fall. And facial injuries in such situations are quite common. Generally it happens at an odd hour and gums or the lip start bleeding. I can well imagine the situation of the parents at that time.
In such situations, most of the times, the injuries are very minor. There is only a small cut in the gum or the inner side of the lip or on the portion of the upper or lower lip visible to us. So, let’s quickly have a look at the emergency management which is required to be done by the parents.
* Just take a clean piece of surgical, sterile cotton and press the area (from which blood is oozing out) for just a couple of minutes. Almost always it is suffice to stop the bleeding.
* After the bleeding is stopped, just apply some grounded ice to the affected area. Generally kids like it. Some people prefer to put some grounded ice in a small polythene bad and then apply it over the affected area. It is also perfectly okay.
* Who does not like ice-cream? —if it is easily available, why not the pamper that little one with a cup of vanilla flavour? —-(Dont think that this flavour is doctor’s prescription).
* And at times, because of such injury the front milk teeth become a bit shaky…now what to do? NOTHING —let the Mother Nature heal it. Generally nothing needs to be done and within next couple of days, everything gets fine. But just take care that child is not using those “shaky” teeth for cutting his food. Complete rest is very much important.
* If because of such an injury, the teeth have moved deep into the gums, even then in my experience i have learnt that nothing needs to be done in many cases because within a couple of weeks the teeth (which have been pushed deep inside) come out on its own. Appears incredible and amazing? —But you’ll have to trust me.
* If you feel, you can take the advice of the dentist next morning. If needed, give some painkiller syrup (or grounded tablet) to your little one so that he sleeps comfortably.
* The cold packs which are recommended for about 2 hours intermittently prevent swelling to a great extent.Bottomline —- In such injuries, dont panic, just relax so that your little one also feels all the more relaxed.
* Generally, prefer not to give any antibiotics. And if needed some pain-relieving oral gel or drops can be applied for about 2-3 days. Generally, stitches are also not required —-in case of any doubt, just call your dentist.
Anyway, just take it easy !!
