1. What is a wax pattern?
The wax pattern is an accurate reproduction of the missing tooth structure. It forms the outline of the mould into which the gold alloy is cast.
2. Why is Gum Dammar added to paraffin wax, which is the main ingredient of Inlay wax?
Gum Dammar is added to paraffin wax to improve the smoothness of the wax while moulding and make it more resistant to cracking and flaking. It increases the toughness of the wax and the smoothness and luster of the surface.
3. Why should the inlay wax be in a colour contrasting die material?
It is because, the wax margins have to be carved close to the die and a contrasting colour will facilitate proper finishing at the margins.
4. Why is dry heat preferred over a water bath for manipulating the inlay wax?
Using a water bath can result in the inclusion of water droplets that splatters on flaming, smear off the wax during polishing and distorsion of the pattern during thermal changes.
5. How is inlay wax heated over a flame?
It is heated in a flame by twisting it till it becomes shiny and then removed from the flame. When it is warm throughout, it is kneaded together and shaped into the cavity.
