Treatment for mumps
Specific treatment will be determined by your physician based on:
child’s age, health, and medical history
extent of the disease
your child’s tolerance for specific medications, procedures, or therapies
expectations for the course of the disease
your opinion or preference
The goal of treatment for mumps is to help prevent the disease or decrease the severity of the symptoms and prevent severe complications from occurring. Since it is a viral infection, there is no cure for mumps. The following are some of the treatment options that may be followed:
acetaminophen for fever and pain
rest
increased fluid intake
Adjust your child’s diet to what is tolerated by your child. Foods that cause an increase in saliva production will cause an increase in pain.
Prevention of mumps
The mumps vaccine is usually given in combination with the measles and the rubella vaccine. It is called the MMR. It is usually given when the child is 12 to 15 months of age, and then again between 4 to 6 years of age.
