On 1 January 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development -was adopted by world leaders in September 2015 at an historic UN summit -which officially came into force. They presented an unprecedented opportunity to bring the countries and citizens of world together to embark on a new path to improve the lives of people everywhere. Sustainable development has been defined as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
