These instructions detail the exact procedure for bonding or luting porcelain veneers. The instructions are written to help the dental assistant follow the proper procedure, and also to help the dentist. Porcelain veneer luting is a complex procedure, and instructions need to be followed very carefully or the bond may fail.
If you are luting porcelain veneers with any other bonding materials than those specified here, be sure to consult the manufacturer’s instructions.
Pre-appointment preparation by the dental assistant:
1. Place Rely-x porcelain primer on the etched surface of the porcelain veneers and let it dry prior to the appointment.
2. Lay out the porcelain veneers on the tray paper. Draw a circle in pencil for each veneer, with the tooth number in the circle, and then place each one in its circle.
3. Cut thin retraction cord (purple) enough to go completely across the front of each tooth that will be veneered. Also lay each cord in its circle according to which tooth it’s for.
4. Place the porcelain veneer curing tip on the curing light.
5. Get out the Insure porcelain bonding kit.
6. Get out the etchant and All-Bond materials, the Superoxol, and brushes. (We will use a red brush for the Superoxol and a green or yellow brush for the All-Bond.)
7. Get out a 3×3 paper pad and plastic mixing spatula for the porcelain veneer luting composite.
Seat the patient:
1. Place topical anesthetic.
2. Pumice the teeth to receive porcelain veneers while you are waiting for the doctor.
Porcelain veneer bonding procedure by the doctor:
1. Local anesthetic
2. Try on the porcelain veneers again.
3. Get out the luting composite – probably Insure clear.
4. Place cord.
5. Brush on Superoxol to prevent gingival bleeding.
6. Etch the central incisors first. Assistant mixes the A+B primer while doctor begins etching.
7. Swab on 5 coats of mixed A+B primer.
8. Dry the primer.
9. Place UNMIXED All Bond D/E bonding resin on the tooth and on the veneers.
10. Place luting composite on the porcelain veneers.
11. Place the porcelain veneers on the teeth. Wipe off the gross excess.
12. Cure just the central part of the porcelain veneer using the porcelain veneer curing tip.
13. Using waxed floss, clean off all the excess luting composite.
14. Cure the porcelain veneers more thoroughly.
15. Repeat steps 5-14 for each group of veneers until they’re all done.
16. Adjust occlusion, shape, and polish.
17. Final cure – 1 minute on the facial of each porcelain veneer with the large curing tip. BE ABSOLUTELY SURE THE WHOLE VENEER IS CURED. This is absolutely critical for the long-term life of the veneer.
18. Assistant can polish between the teeth using the Epitex polishing strips.
