Gingival colored composites will be the best. But stains have an advantage that you can modulate the stains according to the shade of the patients gingiva.something which cannot be done in a gingival colored composite. As the population ages and we lead longer lives with more teeth the percentage of non carious cervical lesions is going to increase. For restoring many such lesions gingival colored composites or stains are required.
