There may be a new method to combat teeth grinding.
The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston recently tested Botox and its impact on teeth grinding. This problem impacts about 10 percent of Americans while they’re sleeping and mouthguards may not fully solve the problem.
Early indications are that some of the headaches and jaw pain that people experience have subsided after being treated with Botox. The only early side effect is jaw weakness.
For the study, the treatment was used as it would be to deal with wrinkles, only double the dosage. Botox can be used to treat many conditions, including, cerebral palsy, Tourette’s Syndrome, brain injuries and baldness, among others.
This was the first study to use Botox to alleviate teeth grinding. More studies must be done in order for Botox to become a medically acceptable way to treat teeth grinding.
