Patients often want to know the differences between a crown and a large
amalgam restoration with respect to Bhow long will it last,[ which may
be interpreted more generally as inquiry about long-term outcomes such as
longevity of the restoration, necessary repairs, and longevity of the tooth
carrying the restoration. Choosing between a crown and a large amalgam
is presumably a frequent treatment decision presented to patients in dental
practices, although the extent to which they participate fully in these decisions,
and the extent to which they are fully informed about the alternatives is
unknown. It is likely that the information that they do receive
is based on their dentists’ clinical impressions.
