HOW TO MANAGE PATIENTS WITH DENTAL ANXIETY?
In our daily practice, one of the most important aspects is to manage patients with dental anxiety. We get at least one patient in our daily practice who is having dental anxiety. A lot of patients avoid visiting a dentist due to the anxiety about dental appointments.
This is the reason why we should know how to overcome this situation.
As dentists, it should be our top priority to make sure that our patients feel relaxed and comfortable during dental appointments. If someone doesn’t have a positive experience at your dental clinic, they will try to avoid dental appointments not only in your clinic but in any dental clinic.
However, we can manage dental anxiety with some simple tips.
TIPS TO MANAGE DENTAL ANXIETY
1.Deep breathing: Deep breathing is one of the best methods to manage any anxiety. . If a patient feels uncomfortable during their appointment, take a pause and ask the patient to try some basic deep breathing exercises before you continue.
2.Distractions: Distractions in Dental clinics can keep patients’ minds away from any discomfort or fear they’re experiencing. You can do it by having a television or music system in the clinic. Allowing a friend or family member to be in the operating room during the treatment is also helpful. Especially for children.
3.Medications: One of the most popular ways to calm patients with severe dental anxiety that is interfering with an appointment or procedure is by using laughing gas and certain other medications.
4.Hand signals: Dentist and patient can work out with hand signals to deal with anxiety. The best method to use this technique is by telling the patient to hold up a closed fist if they wish to stop the ongoing procedure. This technique helps patients relieve anxiety by knowing that they have the power to stop the procedure when they feel uncomfortable.
Causes of Dental anxiety:
If you have a patient who fears going to a dentist, there must be some reason for it. Many patients might have previous bad experiences with dental treatments. They might have seen bad dental experiences of their friends or family members. Sometimes they might have heard about fearful Dental experiences from their friends or family members. Some patients may have fear of hospitals.
We have to be sympathetic to the fears and anxieties of such patients if we truly want to help them have a positive experience every time they come into our office.
