one of the most compelling trends in dentistry is the shift toward microdentistry, which is the practice of removing the least amount of tooth structure, bone, or tissue necessary to eliminate pathology, then replacing it (when applicable) as conservatively, comfortably, and aesthetically as possible. This paradigm shift in dentistry is moving dentists away from the practice of “wait-and-treat” dentistry to a significantly more proactive form of “diagnose-and-treat” dentistry. Today’s most advanced dentists must think in terms of “absence of disease as a model of health.” Caries is an infectious disease resulting from Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus-two malicious pathogens that need to be treated thoroughly pathogenically and not as a mere excuse to put a hole in the patient’s tooth.In a landmark study, Weerheijm, et al, found cariogenic microorganisms in 53% of dentin samples cultured from sealed carious lesions, while soft dentin was present in all teeth studied. The key to minimally invasive microdentistry is prevention and early accurate caries diagnosis followed by micro-invasive treatment and placement of biomimetic restorations-that is, restorations using materials that most closely mimic natural tooth structure.

It has become difficult to detect tooth decay because of the use of Fluoride in tooth paste. Caries or cavities are detectable by the normal X ray only when they have progressed and have damaged over 1/3rd of a teeth. However with Laser cavity detection it is very easy to detect and diagnose the caries in a a very early stage. Laser Cavity Detection is a non-invasive method that detects tooth decay that is not visible and would otherwise not be diagnosed by conventional methods. Laser cavity detection is based on the fact that healthy tooth structure reflects light differently than it does decayed tooth structure. Laser beam or Laser light easily penetrates healthy teeth, where as on light has a tougher time passing through dental cavities.
Laser Caries Detection works by scanning your teeth to measure fluorescence within your tooth structure. Healthy teeth will have little or no fluorescence. Teeth that have decay present will have higher levels of fluorescence, which are proportionate to how extensive the decay is. The completed scan translates these fluorescence readings into a digital numeric output. Also, these changes in fluorescence and numeric value are emitted as an audio signal which signals the presence of decay as the scan progresses.
