Could anyone guide me whether it would be advisable to go in for orthodontic treatment at the age of 31years (Case of Crowding of anteriors) for esthetic purpose and averagely what would be the duration of treatment?

    Regards.

if the periodontal condition is satisfactory orthdontic treatment should not be a problem.

the duration would depend on the type and the extent of crowding. if the teeth are rotated than permanent/ semi-permanent retention may be required.

if possible pls. post the patients photos.

    regards,

    Veeren

Will there be any specific difference in the treatment plan because of the age like in the duration, appliances to be used etc.? What effect will the age have on the prognosis?

yes. many adult patients would like to wear ceramic braces. the tooth movement could be a little slow.

it also depends on the degree of crowding , the space available etc.

Orthodontic treatment is very much possible but tooth movement will occur at a slower rate. Also we cannot carry out growth modification procedures during this age group so cases with significant skeletal discrepancies are to be treated surgically only. Periodontal condition, presence of tooth wear in the form of attrition, abrasion , bone loss (vertical/horizontal) , number of missing/restored teeth are all important factors which should be considered before starting treatment whether it is an extraction case or a non-extraction one. Retention period after treatment also varies depending upon the severity of the treated malocclusion.
