Corneal disease is the second most common
cause of blindness in the world. It can be corrected
    surgically through various approaches amongst
which ook prothetic approach stands out as the
last available option as of now.
Tooth-in- Eye surgery was developed by Strampelli
in 1963. However Professor Giancarlo Falcinelli, a
student of professor Strampelli has modified and
improved the procedure. It is a procedure which
aims at sight restoration using patient’s own
canine and surrounding alveolar bone as true
heterotropic autograft creating a support for an
    artificial cornea.
A teamwork of an ophthalmologist and a dental
surgeon is required to perform this two stage
    procedure for OOKP.
This technique is being currently practiced all over
the world. Dr. Falcinelli himself was there for 3
years to train Indian doctors. This poster is being
presented to create awareness amongst dental
surgeons regarding this new upcoming procedure.

Thornton who was blind for nine years underwent a first of its kind procedure in the United States known as — modified osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (MOOKP). The procedure implants one of her teeth in her eye, as a base to hold a prosthetic lens.

Does the tooth have to be root canaled before implantation? or it may cause infection in the eye..
