Chemistry – The Photo-fenton reaction
The chemistry of the new Zoom2 gel is based on the “photo-fenton” reaction of peroxide and dissolved iron. This is, in part, the same chemical reaction that causes peroxide to bubble when you put it on a cut on your finger or elsewhere. In the language of chemistry, the reaction of peroxide and iron is:
Fe2++H2O2 ->Fe3++OH- + •OH
In this reaction, the iron ion (Fe2+/ Fe3+) is used up, but it helps to rapidly produce the hydroxyl radical (•OH), which is the real “stain terminator” component of whitening gels.The reaction used in the Zoom system uses this reaction, but then adds a light reaction to prevent the iron ions from being used up:
Fe2++H2O2 ->Fe3++OH- + •OH
Followed quickly by:
Fe3++ light->Fe2++•OHDuring this second step the Fe3+ reacts with light to be “renewed” so it can react again,AND it produces another hydroxyl radical in the process. With this “renewing”, the process starts over again. To understand this fully requires a quick lesson in what is known as “Redox” reactions of iron.As everyone knows, iron rusts when it is left exposed to air. The chemical reaction occurring here is known as “oxidation”. Specifically, elemental iron, Fe, reacts with oxygen to become oxidized iron, either Fe2+ or Fe3+. These are known as “oxidative states” of iron. The Fe2+ is “iron 2”,
written as Fe II and is called the “ferrous iron ion”.The Fe3+ is “iron 3”, written as Fe III and is called “ferric iron ion”. Knowing how they are written is not as important as understanding the phrases iron 2 (Fe II) and iron 3 (FeIII) and knowing that they are two different oxidative states of iron. It is the ability of iron to become either of these oxidative states and change from one back to the other that is critical. The ability of iron to go from Fe II to Fe III and back
again is also what lets our blood carry oxygen to our cells and then release it for the cells to use.Zoom! Advanced Power
