An eight-member delegation of the Dental Council of India (DCI) on Monday inspected the Government Dental College in the city to check the infrastructure and other parameters required to run courses.

The team arrived at the college in the morning and took account of equipments, infrastructure and faculty in the college and carried out inspection for almost two hours. According to sources, the inspection of DCI was in the wake of recent permission to the college for increasing number of seats in the Master’s course of Dental Science. In April 2012, the Union Health and Family Welfare ministry has issued a letter of intent to the state’s only government dental college in the city to take admission in five more seats in the Master’s of Dental Science course. It had permitted the college to admit 10 students every year to study the course in different disciplines.

Dr Subhash Garg, principal, Government Dental College said, “A team has visited to inspect the facilities being provided and infrastructure of the college. We have made certain suggestions for upgradation of the college and have also requested the state government to purchase certain equipments worth Rs 2.66 crores.”

Earlier, in January also, an inspection team of the Dental Council of India had visited the college for taking account of resources available with the college after which Union government issued letter of intent to state’s medical education department to raise the seat limit from coming academic session.

Govt promises action against Beed college
DP Sawant, the minister of state for education, met with the students of Aditya Dental College in Beed on Wednesday and reassured them that the government will take action against the college within seven days. If found guilty, the college will be derecognised by the Dental Council of India (DCI), he said.

Apart from the first year bachelor of dental surgery (BDS) students, second and third year students have also complained against the college to the government authorities.

Jayant Jain, president of the Forum For Fairness in education that is fighting for justice for these students said, “The government should come out with a decision as soon as possible so that students do not lose out on their studies.”

Strict rules have resulted in rejection of 90% proposals to open new dental colleges in the past year. "As many as 110 colleges were not given recognition to run a dental college because of stringent norms. Only 10 were considered and given approval in the year 2012,” said Dr Dibyendu Mazumdar, president, Dental Council of India (DCI). Dr Mazumdar was in the city on Monday to attend college day function at Babu Banarsi Das Institute of Dental Sciences.

He said the DCI recognised only those dental institutes with other medical departments such as ENT, eye, orthopedic and others. "This is to ensure efficient clinical material-patient inflow-in the college,” said Dr Mazumdar. At times, patients who visit eye or ENT or any other department are referred to the dentist
