The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed the Union health ministry to undertake online counselling for 15% central seats in government colleges across the country.
The court underlined the consensus among the Medical Council of India and the government regarding the online counselling for about 25,000 students this year. In February last, the court had introduced this facility for the postgraduate courses. Under the scheme, students seeking admission to nearly 2,500 seats under the all-India quota would get three instead of two chances to choose their colleges. With the online counselling put to work, it is expected that the chances of the central seats being taken away by the states after they fall vacant would be eliminated. There are about 20,000 undergraduate medical seats in government colleges in the country.
The counselling for undergraduate medical courses will commence on June 24 and will continue till September-end.
